Nearly one in four undergraduate women experienced sexual assault on campus either because they were forced or because they were incapacitated by drugs or alcohol, according to a new survey released on Monday. The Associated of American Universities survey, which included interviews from 150,000 students at 27 universities across the country, found 27.2 percent of female college seniors reported that they had experienced some kind of unwanted sexual contact, which could include anything from groping to rape. An estimated 13.5 percent of those respondents said they experienced penetration, attempted penetration or oral sex. The new study is consistent with similar surveys of college students, and revealed some institutions showed rates of sexual misconduct as low as 13 percent and others as high as 30 percent.
