New research claims that pregnant women who are infected with the Zika virus during their first trimester may face as much as a 13 percent risk that their fetus will develop microcephaly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pulled the data after analyzing those hit by the virus in Brazil. Independent from Zika, the birth defect—characterized by incomplete brain development—occurs in 0.02 percent to 0.12 percent of U.S. births.
