At least 1,400 children were sexually exploited in the English town of Rotherham from 1997 to 2013, according to a report commissioned by the borough council. The investigation revealed that children as young as 11 were beaten and raped by multiple abusers. Some were also intimidated and trafficked to other parts of England. "No-one knows the true scale of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham over the years,” said Professor Alex Jay, who led to the report. The investigation found examples of “children who had been doused in petrol and threatened with being set alight, threatened with guns, made to witness brutally violent rapes and threatened they would be next if they told anyone.” Jay charges South Yorkshire Police with failing to prioritize the issue and claims there was “blatant” collective failures on the part of Rotterham's council leadership.
