Up to 2 million dads are staying home to care for their families, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. The number of fathers who do not work outside the home hit 2.2 million in 2010 and decreased slightly to 2 million in 2012. High unemployment rates during the Great Recession contributed to the increases, but the biggest reason for long-term growth in the number of stay-at-home dads is the number of fathers who stay home primarily to care for their family. In 2012, fathers represented 16 percent of all at-home fathers, up from 10 percent in 1989.
