A fire set during a melee at a clandestine rehabilitation center in Lima, Peru, killed 26 people on Saturday. Fifteen people were rescued from the fire, which was controlled by firefighters by Saturday afternoon. The fire department said they are investigating the cause of the fire, though witnesses said a mattress was set on fire during a fracas inside the building. Peru’s fire chief said the victims were trapped inside the building and died from asphyxiation. Around 40 people were housed in the small space with only one exit, locked with a chain—and rescuers had to bypass the heavy metal door to reach the victims.
