Three college students were killed in two shooting separate incidents over the weekend in Louisiana and New Jersey. A Rutgers University-Newark student was killed in an off-campus apartment around 10 p.m. Sunday, officials said. The university said the shooting wasn’t a “random act” and that the community should not be concerned about safety. Meanwhile, two 19-year-old Southern University students were killed in a shooting near Louisiana State University’s campus in Baton Rouge on Sunday. The two women were reportedly caught between two men who began shooting at each other at an off-campus party. Lashuntae Benton, a sophomore, and Annette January, a freshman, both died at the event. Investigators were waiting on ballistics results to determine which man is responsible for fatally shooting them. One of the two men who police say opened fire has been arrested and identified as Ernest Bernard Felton, 22. He is so far charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
