Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, its most popular tourist destination, was hit with the second mass shooting in two days Tuesday when at least eight gunmen on motorcycles opened fire at the Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office in Cancun. Three gunmen and a police officer are reported to have died during the ensuing firefight—which occurred in broad daylight. Five alleged assailants were detained in the aftermath. The siege took place one day after five people were shot and killed during an electronic-music festival at a nightclub in nearby resort town Playa del Carmen. The motive for the latest attack remains unknown, and officials have yet to confirm whether they believe the two incidents were linked or not.
