Everyone just loves talking about the government's mistakes. But this one hits a little closer to home than most: on Friday, a mistake by a federal payroll center led to 40,000 government employees not seeing a paycheck deposit in their bank accounts. The center, which serves 23 different agencies, quickly issued an apology and assured employees that the money would materialize by Tuesday at the latest. On a less hopeful note, it clarified that the government isn't authorized to compensate for overdrafts. So much for going out on the town this weekend.
