The Pentagon told reporters Wednesday that 51 laboratories received shipments of anthrax, across 17 states (plus D.C.) and three foreign countries over a period of at least 10 years. But the scare is not over—the Pentagon expects that number to rise. Anthrax was even detected at the Pentagon yesterday, The Daily Beast’s Nancy Youssef reported, when the Defense Department admitted it didn’t know everywhere it had sent the lethal bacteria. As many as 31 people are undergoing prophylactic antibiotic treatment for exposure, although there is no evidence yet that anyone has gotten ill from the shipments.
So far, only 1 percent of the lots sent out by military labs have been tested, and all have come up positive. The Pentagon has not yet announced which labs received the potent samples.
