A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit northeastern India on Sunday in the state of Sikkim, near the border with Nepal. The quake caused landslides, while many buildings collapsed, and roads were blocked. At least 20 people have been killed, including seven people in Sikkim and five in Nepal. A child succumbed to injuries and and one person was trampled in a stampede prompted by the quake. The death toll is expected to rise as reports pour in from smaller villages. It was Sunday evening in India, and the quake was felt over a broad area. It triggered at least two aftershocks of magnitudes 6.1 and 5.3.
