A magnitude-6.9 earthquake hit a central Philippine island Monday, setting off landslides and prompting officials to issue a tsunami alert. At least 13 people were killed, and 40 are believed missing. In a mountain village as many as 30 houses were buried with as many as 40 residents trapped inside. Soldiers and police have been sent to help with the rescue. A magnitude-7.7 quake killed more than 1,600 people on Luzon in 1990.
