The Air Force announced Thursday that it was firing nine commanders caught up in a cheating scandal in the U.S. nuclear missile program. The officers were in leadership positions at Malmstrom Air Force Base. They were fired because "they failed to provide adequate oversight of their crew force." At one point in the investigation, 100 lower-level officers were thought to be involved, but nine have been cleared while the rest face a range of potential punishments. The cheating scandal was discovered when military investigators were looking into alleged drug activity by airmen, and found test material for the monthly proficiency exams in their possession.
