Sometimes what can be forgotten in all the back and forth about the Democratic platform and the absent then re-inserted language recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital is that there are real flesh-and-blood people involved on the ground there. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) offered a reminder today at a luncheon for Muslim delegates to the Democratic convention.
Ellison initially tried to avoid the issue—because he was speaking at an unrelated event—but ended up denouncing those "who try to make the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a political football, and try then to out-pro-Israel each other." He went on:
This is a serious conflict which requires real focus, and the world needs a solution to it. It should not be reduced to whose platform is more pro-Israel. It's a game that we're playing, but we're playing a game with people's lives.
