U.S. peace talks with the Taliban were sabotaged by furious Afghan government officials, according to an Associated Press investigation. The talks, which were held at least three times between Washington representatives and an emissary of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar in late 2010 and early 2011, were dashed when the Afghan government leaked details as payback. The Taliban intermediary then fled to Europe and is now in hiding, and the U.S. has not talked to him for several months. U.S. officials say the talks were in their incipient stages but were starting to make progress.
