Those who were suspicious of News Corp.’s donation of $1 million to the Republican Governors Association have even more reason to be concerned: According to Rupert Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff, the decision to donate the money came not from News Corp.’s corporate side, as the company has claimed, but from Fox News President Roger Ailes himself. “In the past, Ailes has been stymied or neutralized in his quest to have the company put its corporate money where its mouth is, because the No. 2 in the company until last summer, Peter Chernin, was a Democrat,” Wolff writes. He also says that Ailes has recently purged another obstacle to his political ends: Chernin’s sidekick and PR guy Gary Ginsberg, who would have previously convinced Murdoch to not let Ailes spend corporate money in such ways.
