Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James says she supports lifting the ban on transgender troops. "Times change," she said. "From my point of view, anyone who is capable of accomplishing the job should be able to serve." James said she believes the policy will come under review in the next year and be reassessed. The Williams Institute, a think tank affiliated with UCLA, believes there are about 15,500 transgender troops currently serving in the military. The military's ban against lesbian and gay troops was lifted in 2011 but the transgender ban remains in effect.
