The Ohio city of Akron has lost its second mayor in two weeks after Mayor Garry Moneypenny announced his resignation Monday, just eight days after he took over for longtime Mayor Don Plusquellic. The mayor told reporters on Friday that he would not seek reelection over a "too personal encounter" he had with an employee late last month, but vowed to continue as interim mayor. A Sunday editorial in the Beach Journal called for Moneypenny's resignation over the inappropriate relationship. Council President Jeff Fusco, who was elected council leader last Monday, will have the first right of refusal to succeed Moneypenny. The mayor's announcement gives Democratic candidates three days to file petitions to run in the September primary election.
