Without even realizing it, New York City almost fell victim to one of the deadliest terrorism plots in the United States since Sept. 11, 2001. According to Zarein Ahmedzay, a 24-year-old New York City taxi driver who pleaded guilty to federal charges in a Brooklyn courtroom Friday, two al Qaeda leaders gave the green light for an attack on the New York subway system before they were killed in missile strikes. Co-conspirator Najibullah Zazi, an airport shuttle-bus driver, also pleaded guilty to planning the suicide attacks, scheduled for last September, during the holy month of Ramadan. "The facts disclosed today add chilling details to what we know was a deadly plot hatched by al Qaeda leaders overseas to kill scores of Americans," Attorney General Eric H. Holder said.
