Has Roberto Alomar finally lived down the infamous spitting-in-an-umpire’s-face incident? The second baseman and Bert Blyleven were elected Wednesday to the baseball Hall of Fame. Alomar, a 12-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, was picked on 90 percent of the ballots; Blyleven, who won 287 games as a pitcher and is fifth on the all-time strikeout list, was picked on 79 percent of the ballots. Rafael Palmeiro, Jeff Bagwell, and Mark McGwire—all tainted by alleged steroid use—fell well short of the required 75 percent. Not a single one of them even topped 50 percent.
