A student who founded a white nationalist movement on the University Wisconsin-Madison campus was years ago convicted of arson after starting fires at two predominantly black churches. Daniel Dropik, 33, served more than five years in prison after pleading guilty to the crimes, committed in Michigan and Wisconsin. Dropik, according to court documents, committed the arsons as racist retaliation for encounters with African-Americans were not not affiliated with either church. He is also currently an hourly employee at the university. "I have also become aware that he was convicted in 2005 of racially motivated arsons of two African-American churches," said the school's chancellor, Rebecca Blank. "I am appalled by attacks on churches and by organizations that express hatred of people of color, Jews, Muslims or any other identity." She added, "The safety of our campus community is my top priority."
