Eight years after he first tried and failed, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo declared that he is running for governor of the Empire State. The son of former Governor Mario Cuomo made the announcement via a video message on his campaign website early Saturday morning. Cuomo, a Democrat, pledged to address the state’s dire financial situation with “a one-year emergency financial plan,” a cap on spending, and what will be an unpopular freeze on salaries for public employees. But, he did also promise that he would not increase personal or corporate income taxes. Cuomo also took a shot at the current administration of embattled Gov. David Paterson (who’s not running for election) for the way it has handled itself. “We must restore honor and integrity to government with tough new ethics standards, expanded disclosure requirements, independent investigators to root out and punish corruption, and an overhaul of campaign finance laws,” he said.
