The two candidates are polar opposites, but Rand Paul of Kentucky and Joe Sestak of Pennsylvania might have more in common than meets the eye. In Tuesday’s Senate primaries, Republican Paul beat hand-picked GOP favorite Trey Grayson and Democrat Sestak triumphed over the Obama-backed former Republican Arlen Specter. Analysts say both races indicate that voters rejected party politics. Paul and Sestak both gave speeches after their victories highlighting the triumph of the small man over party politics. "This is what democracy looks like," Sestak said. "We've come to take our government back,” Paul declared. In another key race, the Democrats held onto the late John Murtha’s seat in western Pennsylvania, in a swing district that was the only one in the nation that voted for John Kerry in 2004 but John McCain in 2008.
