An East Texas Tea Party activist who was expected to win a seat on its State Board of Education lost her primary runoff Tuesday after drawing significant media attention for her controversial views about President Obama and slavery. Mary Lou Bruner, a former kindergarten teacher, had posted on Facebook that Obama funded a drug habit in his twenties by working as a gay prostitute. Instead, chiropractor Keven Ellis won Tuesday’s District 9 Republican primary runoff. Had Bruner won, she would’ve been in a position to influence not just the state, but the nation’s textbook choices. Among many other things, she reportedly wrote on Facebook: “The baby named Barak [sic] was an illegitimate son but his grandparents registered his birth in the Hawaii newspapers as if he were legitimate so he could be eligible for welfare. Would Obama have been elected president if he had appeared in public in Muslim attire or if he had admitted publicly he was born in Kenya or he is still a citizen of Indonesia? Just asking!”
