A cyclone described as “apocalyptic” hit Italy’s Sardinia on Tuesday, submerging homes and bridges in floodwaters as deep as 10 feet as rescue workers from Rome struggled to reach the island. Italy’s civil-protection chief, Franco Gabrielli, said at least 16 people had been killed, and one person was still unaccounted for. A family of four is allegedly among the dead, along with a local policeman who reportedly died while helping to escort an ambulance.
