Apple has several hundred employees working on an electric vehicle in a secret lab, the Wall Street Journal first reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The project, code-named "Titan," looks similar to a minivan but will take years to finish and may not even make it to market, according to WSJ. The project may signal Apple's ambition to delve into the smart car industry with the likes of Google and Tesla Motors. Last year Apple released CarPlay, software which allows drivers hands-free access to make calls or listen to voicemails on their iPhones, while the Cupertino-based company recently hired former head of Mercedes-Benz research and development unit Johann Jungwirth. The Financial Times earlier reported that Apple had launched a new secret lab late last year and tapped Jungwirth to join the team. Apple executives have reportedly met with contract manufacturers such as Magna Steyr, according to WSJ. Apple did not respond to a request for comment and a Magna spokeswoman declined to comment.
