Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) has reportedly survived her surgery after being shot in the head during a public event at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson on Saturday. A trauma surgeon says he is "optimistic" about her chances. Earlier reports indicated she and six others had been killed. Eighteen people were reportedly injured. Giffords, 40, was holding her first "Congress on Your Corner" event when a gunman, reportedly in his teens or early 20s, rushed the group and began shooting. Giffords was then rushed to the nearby University Medical Center. According to witnesses, Giffords was talking to a couple when the man began firing indiscriminately. He ran off, but was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody. The congresswoman was elected to her third term in November.
