A dust storm between Phoenix and Tucson on Tuesday has caused at least three separate pile-ups and killed at least one and injured 18. Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the first wave of dust blew across Interstate 10 around 40 miles north at about 12:15 p.m., causing a pile-up of 16 cars—including commercial trucks. A 70-year-old man was killed when his car when “sandwiched between two commercial vehicles,” said Graves. Emergency crews responded to another dust- storm-related crash, involving eight cars, on the same roadway about two hours later—but Graves said emergency crews were hindered by zero visibility at the scene, which caused “tremendous chaos.” A third collision on the same roadway was reported at about 4 p.m., this time involving two tractor-trailers and a small car.
