The backlash begins: Opponents filed two lawsuits on Thursday challenging Arizona’s draconian new immigration law. The first, filed by the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders in a U.S. District Court in Phoenix, alleges that the law encroaches on federal authority and will lead to racial profiling. Separately, a lawyer representing a Tucson police officer has asked the district court in Tucson to block the law. And the ACLU of Arizona, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the National immigration Law Center are also preparing to file a lawsuit on Thursday that says the law is unconstitutional.
