The state of Arizona has admitted that it obtained thiopental, the first of the drugs used in lethal injection, from a non-FDA approved manufacturer. There’s a nationwide shortage in thiopental and, as The Daily Beast reported last week, states are turning to ethically and legally dubious means to obtain it. Arizona’s admission almost certainly means it obtained the thiopental from overseas. The drug is slated to be used in the execution of Jeffrey Landrigan on October 26. Landrigan’s lawyers argue that Arizona’s purchase of the drug from an unreliable source means his execution will have an unconstitutional risk of cruel and unusual punishment.
