Mom and dad, you’re fired. That’s essentially what Selena Gomez did when she reportedly split with her managers. Sources say that the actress, singer, and sometime Justin Bieber girlfriend had “outgrown” her parents. Mandy Teefey and her husband, Brian (Gomez’s stepfather), had managed the star since her 2007 breakout role in Wizards of Waverly Place. Some say the rift in the relationship might’ve been caused by the return of the Biebs into Gomez’s life.
But she's not the only star to “break up” with their parents.
Beyoncé In 2011, Beyoncé fired her father, Mathew Knowles, after 14 years as her manager. The move came in the wake of revelations that Knowles had engaged in an affair with actress Alexsandra Wright, who was pregnant with his child, which led Beyoncé's mom, Tina, to divorce him.
Macaulay Culkin
The Home Alone star actually made his family disappear. In the early '90s, rumors began surfacing that Macaulay's manager-father, Kit Culkin, had been stealing money from his child star-son so, after a bitter custody battle, the court sided with his mother and Macaulay subsequently fired his father.
Michael Jackson
In 1979, a young Michael Jackson fired his father-manager, Joe, which resulted in the Jackson Five breaking up. Although this enabled the King of Pop to launch his own career, Michael wrote Joe out of his will.
Gary Coleman
The star of NBC’S Diff’rent Strokes fired his parents as his trustees when he was 20. Coleman had been off the show for two years, and could afford multiple homes on his own. In court Coleman accused them of misspending his vast fortune while he was on the show. He won the case, but only walked away with a small fraction of his original $18 million. He filed for bankruptcy in 1999 due to the alleged mismanagement of his trust fund.
Leighton Meester
Her tumultuous relationship with her drug-smuggling mom (Leighton was born in prison) turned into an even messier court battle. Leighton fired her mother and then sued her for the custody of her younger brother, accusing her mom of misusing funds meant to pay for his medical bills.
Usher
The singer fired his mom on Mother’s Day in 2007. It allegedly had something to do with his engagement to his ex-stylist Tameka Foster. Usher said that “retiring” his mother should have been taken as a compliment—though he did hire her again, and then fired/retired her only a few years later.
Aaron Carter
The Carter family chemistry is a fragile thing. In 2000, Aaron Carter canned his mother Jane after she “betrayed” him for $100,000 and stopped his father from seeing most of his shows. How does Nick feel about all of this?
Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett’s mom, Melanie Sloan, had been her manager since she was nine. The star said that once she was married she’d “cut the cord.” After that, Sloan became “cash-poor” and was unable to afford the mortgage for her $1.4 million Manhattan apartment.
LeAnn Rimes
Rimes sued her father/manager in 2000 for withholding millions of dollars of her earnings. They settled two years later, and Rimes said she just wanted her father to be her father.
