The mother of the young woman who planned the infamous pool party in McKinney, Texas, where a white police officer pulled a gun on unarmed black teens is being threatened with eviction from her neighborhood.
Lashauna Burks and her family live in a $237,000 home in Craig Ranch, the community where the pool party occurred. In court records obtained by The Dallas Morning News, Mary Huang, the owner of the home, alleges Burks is past due on her July rent of $1,620.
Huang had asked Burks and her family to vacate the house on July 8.
Burks says the traumatic aftermath of the event, coupled with threats to her house and family, led her to missing days working as a licensed vocational nurse, and as a result, she has fallen behind on her payments.
“I couldn’t leave the kids by themselves,” Burks told the paper.
Burks said that if she pays in full before her court date in August, the case will be dismissed. Her previous offer to pay in installments was denied.
Emmanuel Obi, the attorney representing Tatyana Rhodes, the teen organizer of the pool party, told the paper that he would look into whether the eviction was an attempt at retaliation against the family. Obi is not currently representing Burks in the case.
