An ad promoting transgender rights will make its TV debut in an interesting context: the Republican National Convention.
The one-minute commercial, produced by the gender equality group FairnessUSA, features a transgender woman named Alaina Kupec explaining why it's uncomfortable and dangerous for her to use a public bathroom for men.
“Most people, when they stop and think about it, they realize that when businesses can legally force me to use the men's room, it puts me at risk for harassment and violence,” Kupec says.
The ad appears to be a response to the so-called “bathroom laws” championed by Republicans in various states, like the one in North Carolina that requires transgender citizens to use public bathrooms of their born gender.
A video of the ad has already debuted online, but it'll also play during the TV coverage of both the Democratic and Republican national conventions. And since the Republicans go first, they get to give the ad its TV premiere—on the last night of the convention, July 21, on FOX News.
