The Toronto Blue Jays won Game 4 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Tuesday night, preventing the Cleveland Indians from making a clean sweep to the 2016 World Series. Was it just a fluke or are the Jays poised for a comeback?
Leading 3-0 after Monday night’s game, the Indians were positioned seal the deal in Game 4 of the best-of-seven series and head straight to the Fall Classic. Yet after Tuesday night’s game, in which the Jays crushed Cleveland 5-1, the Indians’ victory is less assured.
Establishing an early 2-1 lead and backed up by their season’s best pitcher (and leading American League pitcher) Aaron Sanchez, the Jays were able to stay alive in Game 4.
While there’s still the possibility they could come back, each game in the series is now do-or-die for the Jays. As Toronto manager John Gibbons said after the game, every game from this point on is a Hail Mary.
"It was definitely good focus and the right things were said today,” Gibbons said. "But that's one game. We've got another game... So see what the heck happens."
Still leading 3-1, Cleveland is the obvious favorite to win the ALCS and remain the favorites to win the World Series.
What’s more, the Indians are still riding a strong postseason winning streak, having knocked out their American League Division Series (ALDS) opponents, the Boston Red Sox, in a three-game sweep.
Will the Jays be able to hold off the Indians, even with their backs against the wall? Or will Cleveland be able to clinch victory in Wednesday’s bout?
