Back again for its 74th year, the 2017 Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California on NBC at 8:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Every year, the Golden Globes honor the best of American film and television, and from this year’s bounty of comedies, dramas, and epic futuristic sagas (read: Westworld) on screens big and small, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has selected an all star grouping of talent.
While there were some snubs and surprises, as there are every year, many of the top contenders are somewhat expected.
Even those without a crystal ball knew that a film with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone would earn major nods from the HFPA; and, true to form, La La Land earned seven nominations. Other unsurprising heavyweights in this year’s Golden Globes race include Moonlight with six nods and Manchester by the Sea with five (including a Best Actor nomination for Casey Affleck).
Major surprises for big-screen contenders included Deadpool’s dual nods (Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy), making it the first Marvel film to earn major Golden Globe nominations; Finding Dory’s lack of a Best Animated Feature nod despite being a major box office player in 2016; and Hailee Steinfeld’s Best Actress nomination for Edge of Seventeen over veterans Sally Field and Susan Sarandon.
As for TV nominee shockers, as The Daily Beast entertainment reporter wrote, the biggest surprise was that the 2016 noms were all genuine winners. From Westworld, This is Us, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, to black-ish, Veep, and Atlanta, it seems the HFPA has really upped its game.
In addition to nominating crowd pleasers in television and film, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the almost inarguable choice to award the 2017 Cecil B. deMille Award for outstanding contributions to entertainment to Meryl Streep.
Even the president of the HFPA, Lorenzo Soria, acknowledges that the choice was obvious: “It’s no surprise that the HFPA has chosen Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award. Meryl’s enthralling body of work across a diverse set of genres has made her a role model over the past 40 years... Simply put, she is a trailblazer, having paved the way for women in television, film and stage. For shattering gender and age barriers, all with finesse and grace, the HFPA is humbled to bestow this honor upon her.”
In addition to honoring Streep and acknowledging the exciting entertainment that made 2016 nearly bearable, this year’s Golden Globes Awards will feature presenters Kristen Wiig, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Grant, Rogue One’s Felicity Jones, Jon Hamm, and Chris Hemsworth among many others.
While the nominees, presenters, and even Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree may be predictable this year, there’s still a chance that things will get weird at the 74th annual Golden Globes Award show.
After all, the hard-and-fast rule with awards shows is to expect the unexpected.
