“Let’s check in with the winning, shall we?” Samantha Bee said at the top of Wednesday’s Full Frontal.
It’s been close to a week since President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan effectively killed the Republican Party’s best chance of repealing and replacing Obamacare, but that wasn’t going to stop Bee from reveling in their failure.
After showing a clip of a defeated Trump promising that phases two and three of his health-care bill would have been even better than the disastrous first phase, Bee remarked, “I believe that’s known as the ‘I’m a grower, not a shower’ defense.”
“He couldn’t sell Obamacare repeal to a House that voted for it 60 times already?” she asked. “Closing deals is the one thing President Big Boy Truck was supposed to know how to do!”
Trump also complained that the process would have been a lot easier if some Democrats had voted for the repeal. “Yes, and the Atlanta Falcons would have won the Super Bowl, but they had no support from the New England Patriots,” Bee quipped.
During his negotiations with the Freedom Caucus, Trump told them to focus on the big picture and “forget about the little shit,” which, Bee added, they “assumed was President Trump’s nickname for Sean Spicer.”
In the end, Trump told reporters that at least the whole thing was an “interesting experience” for him, teaching him the ins and outs of what it takes to pass legislation. “Well, hey, when it’s a matter of life and death for millions of people, the important thing is that you learned a lot,” Bee said to Trump. “Good try, buddy! Grab an orange slice and a participation ribbon.”
