James Holmes, the alleged shooter who killed 12 people and injured 70 at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, says he called a mental-health hotline outside the theater just before the shooting. The revelation comes from a taped conversation with a psychiatrist that was shown to jurors Tuesday. Holmes says the call to the crisis line was disconnected after nine seconds before anyone answered, at which point he lingered for a few seconds then walked inside and attacked. “At that point, I’m on autopilot,” he said. Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for the 2012 murders.
