'Barefoot Diva' Cesaria Evora Dies

Cesaria Evora, who was known as the "Barefoot Diva" because she always performed without shoes, died Saturday at a hospital in her native island country of Cape Verde in West Africa. She was 70. Evora's powerfully soulful voice, which has been compared to Billie Holiday's and Edith Piaf's, brought to prominence "morna," the music of her little-known country, which is a former Portuguese colony. She sang in a language known as Ciroulo, a mixture of Portuguese, Creole and West African words. She won a Grammy in World Music in 2004 for her album "Voz D'Amor."
