A bear fatally mauled a 16-year-old boy in Alaska on Sunday during an annual mountain race, according to local reports. The teen, who was participating in the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb, texted a family member that he was being chased by a black bear. The National Guard, state troopers, park rangers, and the Anchorage Police Department all immediately responded to the call, while other runners volunteered to take up a search for the boy. He was eventually found off the main trail, and he was pronounced dead on site. A park ranger shot the bear, but it ran away. Officials are still looking for the animal.
