Hurricane Igor, downgraded to a Category 1 storm but still packing winds approaching 80 miles per hour, pounded Bermuda late Sunday night, with the eye of the storm passing just 40 miles west of the British territory near the coast of North Carolina. Flooding has occurred in low-lying areas of the island, and almost 20,000 of the island's residents have lost their power. Streets are littered with fallen tree branches. After passing Bermuda, Igor is expected to head northeast, away from the United States.
