Chris Brown Breaks Down Remembering Michael Jackson
Chris Brown performed what will be remembered as one of the best salutes to Jackson since his death, but it took a weird turn when he broke down while singing “Man in the Mirror.” Overcome by emotion, Brown choked up while trying to sing and eventually fell to his knees. Stirring tribute or clever publicity stunt? Brown certainly does have some inner turmoil to draw from…
Alicia Keys and Her Baby Bump Get Sexy for Prince
Pregnant singer Alicia Keys writhed on top of a piano during an erotic tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award winner Prince, which raised even his eyebrows. It was one of many BET moments for Keys, who seemed to appear on camera every ten minutes—each time with a different outfit—to either accept an award or perform.
Kanye's Comeback?
Returning to the stage after his self-imposed isolation, Kanye West performed where he was least likely to run into Taylor Swift—the 2010 BET Awards. Standing atop an erupting volcano, we think Kanye was telling his fans that he’s still a hot musician and about to explode with auto-tuned awesomeness. Either that, or he’s full of hot air.
The Queen’s Lyrical Flow
Singer and actress Queen Latifah hosted the night and began with some self-deprecating humor that named other potential emcees for the show. Naturally, the options included Lady Gaga, Barack Obama, and current “It Girl” Betty White. Latifah then reminded everyone that her roots are in hip hop by breaking it down and letting her own lyrics flow to the tune of a song by rapper Drake.
Diddy Just Sing and Dance?
These days, Diddy’s a movie star in Get Him to the Greek, an entrepreneur in his MTV show Making the Band, and an all-around bad-ass when he advertises his own vodka brand Ciroc and fashion line Sean John. But it’s easy to forget that Diddy—a.k.a. Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Sean Combs, or Jennifer Lopez’s ex-boyfriend—was a musician first. He may be dropping letters from his name, but he still knows how to put on a good show.
What’chu Talkin’ ‘Bout, Todd Bridges?
Todd Bridges, better known as “Willis” on the sitcom Diff’rent Strokes, honored his fictional little brother and friend, the late Gary Coleman. Though he stumbled through his speech, Bridges made a tribute to Coleman by asking the audience to recite Coleman’s signature catchphrase, “What’chu talkin’ ‘bout Willis?” Bridges said that the saying haunted him his entire life, confessing that “even when I was in prison, I heard that mess.”
The Next R&B Superstar is 13
Thirteen-year-old Gabi Wilson spent her birthday singing Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’.” Not bad considering she did it on stage at the BET Awards. The future R&B diva, who’s appeared on The Today Show, The View, and The Mo’Nique Show, should take note of the audience’s reaction to her performance. We’re betting her next BET awards appearance will be to collect a statue of her own.
