Osama bin Laden could have been hiding in Pakistan for more than seven years before he was killed, Pakistani officials said Saturday. Bin Laden’s wife, Amal Ahmed Abdulfattah, reportedly told investigators that he and his family spent five years in Abbottabad, but they had stayed in a nearby village for two and a half years before that. Abdulfattah was detained, along with two other wives and several children, after the raid that killed her husband. Pakistan is facing increasing pressure to explain how bin Laden lived so close to the capital undetected for so long. Pakistan receives billions of dollars in federal aid from the U.S. and the revelations of bin Laden’s presence have raised questions about the country’s commitment to fighting militancy.
