A global bleaching event is affecting the world's coral reefs for only the third time in recorded history. It is triggered by stresses on coral reefs and causes coral to expel the algae that live inside of them. The coral eventually starve without these algae providing them with nutrients. Coral stress is primarily attributed to rising ocean temperatures.
