Despite their wishes, bodies donated to medical science at New York University have ended up in mass graves, which are supposed to be used for the indigent, The New York Times reports. Donors, who signed forms that promise cremation and disposal of their ashes in an “appropriate and dignified” manner, ended up in Hart Island graves. The practice reportedly lasted until 2013, when the college was sending some of the privately donated cadavers to a city morgue. NYU spokeswoman Lisa Greiner said: “As an institution, we weren’t aware that this was happening. I promise you it’s not happening now.”
