It’s a bird, it’s a plane … it’s a new Boeing! The company delivered the first 787 Dreamliner on Sunday. The plane is made of lightweight plastic composites and is designed to use 20 percent less fuel than older planes. Delivered three years behind schedule, the 787’s cost is estimated to have ballooned to $32 billion; new planes typically cost roughly $15 billion. The first plane was delivered to All Nippon Airways. The company’s senior vice president, Satoru Fujiki, said, “I can’t say the delayed delivery didn’t have any impact, but ANA and Boeing worked closely to mitigate it.” The plane will head to Japan on Tuesday and is due to enter service on Oct. 26.
