Welcome to the world of tomorrow! Boeing is planning to send tourists into the wild blue yonder by the year 2016 with a space taxi system that will hurtle its passengers through low Earth orbit. After signing an agreement with Space Adventures Ltd., Boeing hopes to create “another opportunity to jump-start the human migration to space,” according to their vice president and general manager of space exploration (yes, they actually have one). Boeing has been building rockets for years, while Space Adventures has sent extremely wealthy tourists to the Russian spacecraft Soyuz seven times—most recently at a cost of $40 million a ticket. The biggest obstacle to the space taxis is Congress, where President Obama’s commercial space initiative has been met with opposition.
