The Bosnian city of Sarajevo marked the 100-year anniversary of the day an Austrian prince was murdered in the city, setting in motion the chain of events that led to World War One. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated in 1914 on the streets of Sarajevo by a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb named Gavrilo Princip. In the resulting war, more than 10 million soldiers perished and the face of Europe was reconfigured. Today, leaders of Serbia and the Bosnian Serbs consider the teenage assassin a hero and plan to re-enact the murders in the easter Drina river town of Visegrad.
