Good news for the Real Housewives: The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of Botox to treat chronic migraines, defined as those that occur 15 or more days per month. The green light was based on two studies funded by its manufacturer, Allergan, in which patients who received Botox injections experienced between 7.8 and 9.2 fewer days of headaches than those who didn’t. Chronic migraines “are one of the most disabling forms of headache,” said Dr. Russell Katz, a member of the FDA’s drug-evaluation team, and they affect about 3.2 million Americans. The drug—whose generic name is onabotulinumtoxinA, but you knew that—has not been proven to prevent migraines that occur with less frequency.
