A new vaccine has shown to prevent breast cancer in mice, according to a preliminary study. The news, released in the June 10 issue of Nature Medicine, is promising, but the medicine has yet to be tested on humans, which means it’s too early to know if it will prevent breast cancer, according to one oncologist. Many drugs that seem promising in lab tests on mice do not succeed on humans, and testing on women is difficult, mainly because women who are at high risk for the disease already have several alternatives for prevention, including preventive mastectomy or the drugs tamoxifen or raloxifene.
