An estimated 30 people are dead after a footbridge over the Kameng River in northeast India collapsed on Saturday, officials told the Associated Press. Police rescued at least 28 people from the river, one of whom later died in a hospital. Many of the people crossing the bridge when it collapsed were reportedly women and children, and officials have said the Kameng's swift current has hindered rescue operations. Just last week, 31 people died after a wooden bridge in West Bengal caved in. Officials said the already shaky bridge, which was built in 1942, was weakened by a September earthquake.
