A set of surveillance cameras were rolling, but not recording on Sunday night at Newark Liberty International Airport when someone was spotted walking into a secure area, setting off a security alert that shut down the airport for seven hours. The malfunctioning cameras, owned by the Port Authority, forced the TSA to obtain permission to use a second set of cameras from Continental Airlines. The breakdown lead to a two-hour gap between when the security breach occurred and when the TSA was finally able to confirm it. The TSA claims that it has no independent control of the security cameras in any of the country's airports, despite being primarily responsible for securing U.S. skies.
